one week later

I raided once with my old guild and gave up on it. I just couldn’t get into it. I think the fact that they’re in the exact same place progression-wise as they were in April when I left just accelerated my burnout on raiding.

But I haven’t given up on WoW just yet. I’ve gone back to my druid and found renewed interest in finishing his various rep grinds. I’m very close to exalted with Shatari Skyguard and Ogri’la. Once they’re done, it’s Netherwing (currently halfway through revered). Then maybe Kurenai (also revered). I’d like Consortium (revered as well) too, but man, that is quite a grind. (That reminds me: I need to get my Consortium gems!)

I use the WoW Reputation Calculator to track my progress and what I need to do to get the most rep in the least amount of time.

So what am I going to do about raiding? I’m not sure yet. I’m getting my Vengeful Gladiator’s Dragonhide Helm this Tuesday, which replaces my aging Tier 4 helm (for bear anyway). Then I’ll pick up Brutal Gladiator’s Dragonhide Gloves a couple of weeks later. Those two items plus Slikk’s Cloak of Placation, which I’m finally picking up after all these months. (It was an issue of staying uncrittable.) That will complete Wicker’s tanking gear plan until I’m able to do post-Gorefiend Black Temple content and Sunwell.

Then there’s the issue of his DPS gear. That’s a whole other ball of wax that I will cover in another post.

the prodigal raider returns

Last night marks my return to raiding in World of Warcraft. In a bitterly ironic twist, the raid was called due to low attendance.

The past two months away from WoW really changed my perspective on the game. Whereas I left mainly due to a lack of time to raid, I also was frustrated with the content and the repetition that the game has for me after almost four years of playing it.

I played EverQuest 2 in May and there was a lot I liked about that game. It really expanded my views on and understanding of how MMORPGs work, and how some things are really great and others fail miserably. EQ2 also enhanced my frustration with WoW as I saw a less-popular game implement features that should have been patently obvious to the WoW developers as having enormous value. And to an equal extent, I had the same vice-versa view with EQ2 (woe to the map developer in that game).

Unfortunately I was not able to raid in EQ2 because I got to level 42 and quit. In another post I’ll outline why.

My guild welcomed me back, but I’m not playing my druid; I am far too burned out on Wicker, and I’m completely enamored of bow-using classes. That means I’m playing a huntard. A future post will go into details as to why I’m playing a hunter, why I played a hunter in Lord of the Rings Online, and why I played a ranger in EverQuest 2.

It’s good to be back.
