mission accomplished

When 2.4 was released, the attunements for Mount Hyjal and Black Temple were removed. I was unable to snag my Vashj vial before 2.4, but I did get my Kael vial. Lots of folks in my guild got their Hand of A’dal titles, which is pretty cool. Mine is forthcoming.

My dream since Burning Crusade came out has been to raid Mount Hyjal. On Tuesday night, I finally got to walk in there and kill bosses. We downed Rage Winterchill on our first night, which netted my Black Temple attunement (I had done all the previous steps). On the second night, we downed Anetheron and Kaz’rogal. Kaz’rogal was a guild first, so we were very excited about that. Anetheron was a bit of a challenge, as his trash is insane, but he died and dropped Pillar of Ferocity. Imagine my glee when I looted that staff. Everyone was excited and happy for me. A guildie even enchanted it with +35 agility right there in the raid. It’s a huge up for me both in terms of DPS and tanking. Hopefully we’ll unlock the Sunwell badge vendor soon so I can grab my new DPS staff, but this new one will do just fine in the meanwhile.

onyxia fun

Ever wanted to know what it’s like to face Ony down?

WoWScrnShot_031608_003417

Kindly notice that there are only three people in the raid: me (tank), pally (healer), and warlock (DPS). Yep, we three-manned Onyxia. I’ve always wanted to tank her, and tonight I had my chance.

It took thirty minutes to get her to phase 2, and we wiped on a bad deep breath. So we tried again.

On the second attempt, she was bugged in phase 1; she just walked around while we dps’d her down. That went quickly. Phase 2 was a breeze, and then it was just a matter of waiting her out in phase 3.

As you can see, we were successful. She went downtown georgia brown.

She dropped roughly 47g each, shaman helm, pally helm, an offhand, and some other junk. I was lucky enough to win the Onyxia Hide Backpack, which I actually needed because I still had a 16-slotter.

So my dream of tanking Onyxia came true, and it felt just as sweet as I thought it would. So many memories….

kael, week two

On Thursday we got Kael well into phase 4. It was a good opportunity for me to figure out how to tank the phoenixes that spawn. We were going to do another attempt to see if we could get to phase 5, but we had trash respawns and it was almost quitting time anyway.

I was very fortunate to receive my Nordrassil Feral-Mantle (aka Tier 5 shoulders, aka tanking shoulders) this week. I also got Shoulderpads of Dancing Blades from ZA.

Tomorrow night we’re going back to TK for more Kael attempts, assuming the right people are on. I’m hoping that we get him down then.

kael, i hardly knew ye

After two nights of Kael attempts, I have to say, that is a really fun fight. The funny thing is, I haven’t actually fought Kael yet. We’re working on honing our skills on phase 3. That’s just how it goes. Hopefully this week we’ll get him down, get Vashj down again, and start Hyjal next week.

I snapped this when I saw Kael for the first time. That’s Kael there in the middle. If I had gotten much closer, well, you know.

Side note: as soon as WotLK releases, I’m changing my hairstyle.

happy raider

Last night we downed Leo the Blind, Morogrim, and Fathom-Lord in SSC, then Solarian in TK. For the most part, it was an uneventful night, except for one little thing on Fathom-Lord.

The raid leader went over the assignments for each of FL’s adds. A warrior was to tank the hunter and so on, and as I was going to be switched out for that warrior, I didn’t really pay attention. Then it turns out that the warrior is AFK and out of Vent, so I get his spot. There’s just one problem: I had no idea what I was doing.

The MT starts the pull and a series of events transpires that results in many of us dying. First, I didn’t aggro the hunter fast enough. Faerie Fire was resisted and I had to get in Growl range. Then I hear the other folks say, “The pet is killing everyone.” I thought to myself, “Hm, they should put a tank on the pet.” Yes, I was supposed to be that tank.

After we wiped, the raid leader asked for the warrior again, but he was still AFK. So somewhat grudgingly, they decided to go for another attempt with me tanking the hunter. I quickly went to BossKillers and read the tanking strategy for Fathom-Lord. I clarified a couple of items with the MT and we started the pull.

This time, I opened with two moonfires. That was enough to get the hunter to come toward me. I popped into bear form and did my tank rotation. His pet spawned, I picked him up, and I put a Mangle and 5 Lacerates on him. I alternated between the two targets, keeping Mangle and Lacerate up, and it worked beautifully.

Fathom-Lord dropped the Bloodsea Brigand’s Vest, Leggings of the Vanquished Champion, and Leggings of the Vanquished Defender. Imagine my surprise when I won the token for my tier 5 legs. It’s my first tier 5 piece, and I was very happy. Once I got back to Shattrath, I picked up my shiny new Nordrassil Feral-Kilt and put the Nethercleft Leg Armor on them, plus a Solid Star of Elune in the socket. Compared to my Forestwalker Kilt, I end up with more armor, more AP, more crit, more hit, and the same stam.

Don’t worry: these loot-happy posts are rare. I just like the story of my tier 5 legs. :D
